Record-breaking heatwaves hit Antarctica in 2020 and 2022. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, the continent experienced air temperature increases of 3°C in the Antarctic Peninsula, 5 times the mean rate of global warming as reported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
