Beneath the waves
Although there are no trees in and around Antarctica more than 100 million birds nest and breed there.
Emperor penguins – the biggest of all
Emperor penguins are the biggest of all the penguins. Penguins are the most common birds in the Antarctic. Living in colonies with populations larger than some cities, and surviving in the harshest of conditions, it is no wonder that penguins are seen as the emblem of Antarctica. Penguin wings are short, stiff flippers which propel them underwater.
